We travel a lot and these are some of the companies we use often.

Top Things to See and Do In Fiji

    1. Stay on Denarau island

The hotels on Denarau island are 5 star. This island is man made and is very safe as it is fully gated and privatized. You can expect all of the amenities when you get here including, a golf course, waterpark, great shopping and excellent restaurants. This is also where the main marina is located to get out to the Fiji Islands!

    2. Climb a Mountain, The Sleeping Giant

Located very close to Nadi is the sleeping giant mountain. If you look at it from a distance, you will notice it actually looks like a sleeping giant. This is where you will find the most beautiful garden you can walk through, called the garden of the sleeping giant. In this area you will also find the mud pools.

    3. Visit the Fiji Islands or Mamanuca Islands

The Fiji islands are spectacular, take a ferry out to the islands and explore. You will find real paradise here. When we were there last we visited Tokoriki island. There were really beautiful resorts on the small island and lots to do. Other popular islands include Turtle island, Beachcomber island and Castaway Island. You may have seen picture online of a heart shaped island, yes this is real it is called Tavarua island.

    4. Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pools

The Sabeto hot springs is a really fun day out. We took our kids there and they loved it. First you cover yourself in high nutrient mud and let it dry on your skin. Once it is dry, you move to hotspring 1 and wash off the mud. Once clean you move to hot spring 2 and relax. It is really chilled out and beautiful as you are surrounded by lush fields and mountains.

    5. Visit the big city Suva in Viti Levu

If you like cities, Suva is the only really big city in Fiji. Here you will find some rare gems like nightclubs and bars along with great shopping and restaurants. This is the main city and is the most populated place in Fiji. Be careful for pick pocketers here!

    6. Stay at the Mariott Momi Bay’s over the water bungalows

The Marriot Momi Bay is like something out of a dream. Located just 15 minutes from Nadi, this hotel is epic. They have over water bungalows, beautiful ocean front restaurants. And the best beach in the Nadi area. We stayed here and loved it. The water was perfectly still so was perfect for you children. There was a lot to do for kids including a kids club, all of the water sports you can think of, and even dress up as a Fijian warrior. Some of the best pictures we got were at this resort. There were also various educational activities including how to make Fijian food and how to weave palm baskets.

    7. Visit local Markets and shop for Souvenirs

You will have a blast visiting local markets and shopping. These areas can be busy, but this really shows you THE Real Fiji. The people are very hard working and use whatever resource they can to make a living. We bought lots of fruit and vegetables from the markets and stocked our hotel room. The fruit there by the way is the tastiest I have ever had. We had fun shopping in various souvenir shops, but the one with the largest selection and best Prices was called Jacks.

    8. Do a Village tour or Donate to a local School

The village tours are a great experience and are safe for families to attend. Some of the village tours are run by tour companies. You will get to meet a real chief, interact with the local Fijians and learn about their culture. Most of the village tours will include lunch, a kava ceremony and meet the locals. We visited Navoli Sangam School in Ba and brought school supplies. The kids played with our kids and the teachers offered us Kava to drink! We set this up before we got there, let me know if you want the contact info. It will be included in the pic below.

    9. Visit the other main city Nadi

Nadi is close to a lot of the things you will want to see in Fiji. When you arrive to Fiji you will most likely be flying into Nadi airport. It is 20 minutes to everything including Denarau, Momi, the Ferries and more. Walk through Nadi town and shop and dine. This is one of the best places to get some real Fijian food, not westernized by the hotel chains. It is also way cheaper to buy souvenirs here. Don’t forget to negotiate!

    10. Explore Fiji underwater

Swimming or snorkelling in Fiji is amazing. The water for the most part is very calm and safe for most swimmers. Fiji is the soft coral capital of the world, the water is rich so everything grows here. You will find huge schools of colourful fish, turtles and a lot more. My son and I saw 3 baby shark swimming in the shallow water. They were tiny and cute!

    11. Beach Hop

Hire a driver and get them to take you around to different beaches. You will find that the sand is different everywhere you go in Fiji. Some of the sand has lots of shells in it, some have small coral pieces everywhere and others are very fine and light. Most of the best beaches you can find in Fiji are out on the islands, but there are some gems on the main island as well. Some of those gem are Horseshoe Bay, Momi bay,  Liku Beach, Natadola Beach, and honeymoon beach.

    12. Meet the Locals

You will find that the local people in Fiji are for the most part very nice and family oriented. In their villages they live together and are highly social unlike most western cultures. Whenever we travel we try to befriend some of the locals. This is a great way to learn some of the secret spots you may want to see. Some travellers will even go to a locals home for a meal. I don’t recommend doing this as there are obvious dangers, but to each is own.

      Fijians

  1. Fishing

With rich waters comes great fishing. You can fish off the shore or rent a boat, either way you will have a lot of fun. Ask some of the locals what the fish are going for. I usually ask hotel staff if they know anyone with a boat. I have saved a lot of money this way, but it is not the safest way to go and I would not let my family come with me.

  1. Drink Savusavu Kava

Apparently Savusavu is the best Kava and it is from Fiji. Kava is a drink that is by the local fFijians out of the root of a Kava plant. It has relaxant properties and is said to be a enthiogenic. I tried it and it numbed my tong, I felt relaxed and chill. The Fijians drink this often in social settings, kind of like how we drink a beer. But this stuff is supposed to be good for you.

  1. Visit some waterfalls like Tavoro Falls

There are many beautifull waterfalls in Fiji, many of them you can swim in! Every time we are away, we waterfall hunt. This makes for amazing pictures and its a great way to explore the landscape. Pack a lunch and head out, most of the waterfall in Fiji have signs that point directly to where you need to go. Try Nakagawa Falls if you are is Savusavu, Paradise falls if you are in Sigatoka or the Waitavala waterslide falls.

  2. Explore the Coral Coast

The Coral Coast is 80km of wjite sand beaches located on the southern part of Viti Levu island. There are loads of hotels here in every price range. The coral coast also provides great snokeling and scuba diving as the name suggests.

  3. River Rafting Fiji

River rafting in Fiji is an adrenaline rush. People often forget about the rich inland rivers and lakes in Fiji due to the beautiful surrounding ocean.

Common Questions

  • Is Fiji Water really from Fiji?

Yes Fiji water is definitely from Fiji, it comes from lakes on the mountains and is filtered and bottled right there. However it is the most expensive water to buy in Fiji. There are several other brands that are very good quality water for half the price. Fiji is very hot and you will have to consume a lot of water to stay hydrated there, so in my opinion you can go with less known brands and get a similar result. They are in fact all from Fiji!

  • Is Fiji a good place to go on vacation?

Fiji is an amazing place to go on vacation for the right type of person. You have to be able to have an open mind and be able to respect another countries customs and culture. There are lots of backpackers there, as well as luxury travellers. Some of the wealthiest people in the world call Fiji home including Tony Robbins! Fiji is a third world country so you can expect a lot of poverty, but the people are generally very happy. Fijians love tourist as this is a major part of their economy. There are some very high end accommodation here and the entire island of Denarau was made specifically for tourists.

  • Does Fiji have all inclusive packages?

Yes there all all inclusive packages at some resorts in Fiji. The all inclusive packages include meals and can also include liquor. You will find that they are a little expensive to go this route, but in the end there is some money savings by going this route depending on what you eat and where. The only way I would do an all inclusive is if I was staying on resort 95% of the time and eating and drinking only there. Personally I prefer to learn about a country when I visit, so I like to move around and eat local.

  • How much does an average Fiji vacation cost?

Fiji vacations are very different than a lot of places in the world in that a vacation here can be all over the map. Some people stay in hostels and eat local along with hostel food and this can be very cheap. You can even camp out to save even more money. And then at the other end of the spectrum there are super luxury accommodations catering to the very wealthy. So in other words you can stay here for as little as $15 USD per night all the way up to $25,000 USD per night depending on what you want. For the average person you can expect hotels to average $140 USD per night and you can eat locally to save even more money. I wrote a guide that shows you 17 ways to save money in Fiji to help you choose what price range you want to be in.

  • Is Fiji airways a good airline?

Fiji Airways was a good experience for our family. The service was good and the Fijian workers aboard are awesome and friendly. I found the seating a little tight on the plane we took from New Zealand. Fiji is becoming more and more popular every year for travel and the airline is growing fast, having international flights from India, New Zealand and Australia.

  • Where is Fiji?

Fiji is an island country located in the South Pacific. It is considered a Polynesian Country and is close to Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga. Fiji is also very close to Hawaii and New Zealand. Fiji is the soft coral capital of the world and is a very popular dive spot and tropical hot spot.

  • What does the flag of Fiji look like?

The Fiji flag has a light blue background with the British coat of arms in the upper left corner. There is a Red and white shield with gold on it on the bottom right corner of the flag. This flag has been around since Fiji’s independence in 1970.

  • Is the food in Fiji good?

For foodies like me Fiji is a dream as there are two distinct cultures here. One them is the Fijians and the other are the Indian Fijians. The original Fijians eat a lot of fish and vegetables like Taro. You should try their version of ceviche called Kokoda! The Indians have south Indian style of cooking and eat curries and many of them a vegetarian diet.

  • Where are the best beaches in Fiji?

The best beaches in Fiji are located on the Fiji islands. Some of the island strips are called the Mamanuca islands and the Yasawa islands. Fiji has a total of 330 island and they are beautiful. Some are inhabited and others are only good for days trips. Either way if you are visiting Fiji, this is a must do. There is and inter island Ferry that leaves out of Denarau and is very fair priced.

  • When was the last military coup in Fiji?

Fiji is known for military coup’s, this is when the government is taken over by the military due often to bad leadership. This has happened 3 times since 2006. These coups have not been violent and have not affected tourism. The last coup was called the coup D’etat part 2!

  • What language do they speak in Fiji?

They speak the local Fijian language and English. The Indians speak Hindi and english. You will find Fiji is a mostly english speaking country as tourism is the major trade here.
