Ko Olina Secret Lagoon and Beach, Oahu Hawaii
If you are travelling to Honolulu, Oahu and you want to find one of the best beaches to go. You will love the Ko Olina secret lagoon and beach. It is one of the most amazing places you can go on Oahu for its amazing beach and spectacular snorkelling.
As a family, we have been to Oahu multiple times because of the time share we own here. I really hate going to the same places over and over again, and I love to explore new areas.
After asking around from the locals and searching online, we discovered that there was a place called the secret lagoon in the Ko Olina area. How could we have missed this? I went to every lagoon in the Ko Olina area and I never saw this….So today we made the drive out to Ko Olina again. I asked my local Oahu friend Sam, and he told us to head down to the Ko Olina area and ask around.
When we got there, I spoke to a security guard and he knew exactly what I was talking about. He gave us directions and we headed down to the beach. It was a little hard to find, and I will include directions to beach in this article.
When we got there, we found that the beach was practically deserted. It is one of the few beaches on Oahu that you will find tranquility.
Now you probably know that we love to snorkel. As soon as I put my mask on and dunked my head in the water, I saw a huge Hawaiian sea turtle. It was amazing! The snorkelling in this area cannot be beat in the winter months when the north shore swells are big. The beach was really shallow and there are actually 2 separate secret lagoons here with a very diverse array of sea life and underwater topography.
How to get to Ko Olina beach
When you first drive in to Ko Olina off the highway, you will see the paradise cove building with signs. This is where they do the Paradise cove Luau. Pass the parking lot until you see a fire hydrant on the main road at the end of the parking lot. Take a right here and drive into the lot. Drive straight towards the gate in front of you and take a right into the small parking lot and park your car. It will look like there is nothing here, but trust me this is the spot.
When you get out of the vehicle look for a walking path that goes towards the Paradise cove building, there will be a fence and a path. Enter the path surrounded by trees, it is a sand path right to the beach.
What will I see at the secret Ko Olina beach?
You will sea sea turtles, possible seals, lots of crabs, large eels and one of the most beautiful beaches in Oahu.
Is the Ko Olina secret lagoon a locals beach?
No It is a public beach open to anyone and everyone. The are no local beaches on Oahu, so you are welcome to go anywhere and everywhere.
Is The Ko Olina secret lagoon good for kids?
Yes the lagoons are protected by a rock wall and there are literally no waves coming in. My 2 year old daughter snorkelled in this area for the first time and she loved it. She saw a huge turtle and I got a cool video of her with it. My son could not get enough, he put on his goggles and spent the whole day in the water.
Can you fish at the Ko Olina secret lagoon?
We fished off of the rocks on the outside of the lagoon and ended up catching 5 fish! We used shrimp as the bait and got nibbles every time we casted. The area is pretty rocky, so you will loose a lot of bait so make sure you use cheap stuff.
Why we love the Ko Olina secret lagoon
We loved this beach because there are way less people here than you will find anywhere else in the Ko Olina area. We also love the clarity of the water, shallowness for our children and the high concentration of sea life. The sand here is fine and the beach slope is not very high. We took a bunch of pictures here and the lighting was amazing with the beautiful beach backdrop that no-one is in.
