Coron, Philippines Sunset Secrets
My family and I are currently staying in Coron Philippines for 10 days and we have have been hunting for the best places to find amazing sunset views. Coron is located on an island a 3 hour ferry ride from mainland Palawan, and it is absolutely stunning.
Once a small fishing village, this area has turned into a laid back beach hopping destination with hundreds of outlying islands to explore. A scuba divers paradise, Coron boasts the best diving in the Philippines with large wrecks, clear water and healthy reefs. Very few people will ever get the opportunity to travel to this remote location unless they really want to get to paradise. The pictures you will get in Coron will last you a lifetime of memories, and the sunset views you can get here are beautiful and more colourful than you might see anywhere else on the planet.
To get the best views you will need to find high ground and overlook the ocean as this is where the light will hit the ocean and reflect over the lush surrounding mountain islands all the way to the clouds.
While we were in Coron I met a photographer that made some photographic suggestions to us on how to get the best sunsets in Coron and we followed some of his guidelines to bring you the best locations and times to see the sunset in Coron.
The Top 3 Places to see the sunset in Coron, Palawan.
1.Sunset Grill
We arrived at sunset grill an hour or so prior to the sunset, we sat down at a table at the very edge of the restaurant closest to the ocean and the first thing that we noticed was the fishing village below. The houses are over the water with rusted out tin roofs and people going by their every day routines in a slow chilled out manner. There are children playing, women doing their household work and the men starting to come home on their long tailed fishing boats. You will realize at this moment that you are witnessing the everyday life of a fishing community struggling to make ends meet as more and more tourists invade their space bringing not only a surge in income, but also rising costs of living.
The restaurant we sat in is beautiful, luxurious and has the coldest beer in town. It overlooks their homes, and I came to the realization that one day in the near future this space will no longer be occupied by locals. The restaurants and resorts may fill the space in time and ruin the delicate balance that this place has.
When you look over the horizon you will notice the boats in the suns shadow and the clouds brighter than you will see them in the day time. This is the sun starting to reflect off of the ocean. As the sun decends down being the mountains, the sky will start to change colour and the clouds will become more defined. Is the sky in Coron turning red? This lasted for around 1 unreal hour that had the clouds turning red to orange all the way to purple.
The best sunsets in Coron happen after the sun goes down over the mountains.
2. Tapyas Mountain
Tapyas mountain is the highest point above Coron town, to get here you will have to climb around 750 step to the top. It is fully paved and along the way there are rest stops that offer a beautiful view of the town and the outlying islands.
If you plan on watching the sunset on Tapyas mountain, you should try to be at the midpoint 350 steps up by 5:30pm. This is when the magic will start and you can hang out in the little park/garden that they have made up there.
By 545, you should leave this area and head to the top. When you get there you will notice a giant sign of Coron and a massive cross. You will get the benefit of seeing how the light affects the rest of Coron during the sunset, because of the 360 degree views you get from the top.
The world looks much different from up here.
3. Island tours
During your island tours if you rent a private boat you will get the opportunity to make decisions on the location you want to be in last. Choose a location close to the mainland and you will be able to see the sunset right from your boat as you come in. There is something magical about being on the water while the sunset reflects off the ocean. It gives you the feeling of bliss and almost like heaven has opened up its gates to you.
4. The boatyard and fish market
This is located at the end of town and it is where you will be catching your boat to go on the island tours. There are unencumbered views of the ocean for miles here. Try to be there by 6-6:30 pm to see the magic.
Don’t miss the opportunity to view the sunsets of Coron, it will give you some crazy cool pictures and will help you reflect on the small things you are missing out of life.
