Top 10 things to do in 2017 in Melbourne, Australia

Adventugo has compiled a list of things to do in Melbourne, Australia with children based on recent experiences on Oct 2017. These types of lists are often shared online, but will change as cities grow and more tourist features are added.

For the greatest convenience there is one area we can recommend to stay, This is the Docklands part of the city. It is within walking distance to many well priced hotels, public transportation and of course the beautiful waterfront docs with restaurants nightlife and the large stadium that hosts sports teams and concerts.

Public transportation is free in Melbourne, there is a city tram that goes all around the main city area and can efficiently take you to all of your main must see destinations. The tram allows for strollers easily with ramps at many marked locations.

Melbourne is a large city and has all of the amenities of a large city, economy is great here and it is rated as one of the top cities in the world to live in. We took a family of four here and there was lots to see and do. The price of food in Melbourne was very similar to that of the US and Canada. For more details check adventugo.com.

We did learn one thing on arrival that parents should beware of when they go anywhere in Australia, make sure you watch out for spiders and other critters. There are many poisonous animals in Australia and you have to be super careful with your children. It is also important to know some of the differences in the most commons species. We saw this spider while in a public facility in Melbourne it is a huntsman spider and is not dangerous but we were a little freaked out by it.

Top 10 things to do in 2017 in Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne Museum: This museum is huge and is an entire day event, there are several sections in this museum outlining many different things for all age groups. First as you enter there is a huge rainforest that will show you many of the various species of plant life and fish in Australia. It is actually growing in an indoor/outdoor sanctuary an is presented professionally and exploratory. Children loved the play areas that are at this Museum, there is a huge jungle gym inside great for all ages. The animal, dinosaur and bug areas were also one of the best we have seen in the world expect to spend hours here.

Melbourne docklands mall: The mall is located in front of the Melbourne star observation ferris wheel. This location was great and a lot of the must do things to do in Melbourne are located here. It is still under partial construction an is open. The Artvo location is here and so is a large arcade for children and a Carnival area as well.

City Tram: The city tram is free and goes all over the city, it takes approximately an hour to do a full circle. This was a great way to get an overview of the city and experience some of the local culture. Very easy to get around and very minimal wait time. Stop off at some of the various parks in Melbourne for some spectacular pics!

Melbourne Star Observation wheel: This is one of the things you see in every picture of Melbourne. It is essentially a large indoor ferris wheel that give amazing views of the city. It is 30 minutes long and there are a few different options such as night view/day view etc. The cost for this was $49 AUS. See the dockland mall Pic for the star pic.

Stroll along the docs: There are many waterfront restaurants at very reasonable prices. There is a juice bar, and amazing Japanese inspired fish and chip bar and views to die for. A lot of really nice boats doc here, so if your into that then this is your spot.

Melbourne Zoo: This is another must see for tourists, you can feed kangaroos and other animals as well as hold the Panda’s. This is also on the route of the tram.

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria/ Melbourne Gardens: This is another free activity, we love free activities. It is beautiful here and this is a very highly rated thing to do in Melbourne with great water fountains and beautiful picture opportunities. Have a picnic or just hang and people watch.

Go fishing: Melbourne offer various fishing charters, this can be a great option to get out of the hustle and bustle of a city. You can also just go and find a spot for yourself for free and take in the local activity.

Artvo: This is a new activity in Melbourne that can be fun for the entire family. Located in the new Docklands mall this can be a quick activity that can give you some amazing pics. The list of it is you (physically) walk onto a painting canvas and position yourself so that it looks like you are a part of the painting. See the pic below for an example of this. Mix this with you dockland mall day.

Go to a rugby game at the stadium: Aussies love rugby. Whether you like it or not, you can immerse yourself in this activity and have a great time while getting to see there state of the art stadium.
